Track Trivia:
This track has a wonderful history. It was built in 1909 and the original surface was actually crushed gravel. It was horrible for racing so they resurfaced out of 3.2 million paving bricks. The first 500 mile race was on Memorial Day 1911 and paid the winner $14,250. The brick surface remained until 1961, when it was resurfaced completely in asphalt.
NASCAR didn't start coming here until 1994 and the first winner here was Jeff Gordon. Elated after winning Gordon found some bricks that were still used as surface in Victory Lane. He got on his knees and "kissed the bricks". Since that time tradition has held that the winner "kisses the bricks" at Indianapolis. By the way, that was Gordon's second win ever, his first? Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway where he won from the pole.
If you run well at Pocono, you will probably do well at Indy. Most teams bring the same car they used at Pocono. While there are four turns here there are also four straightaways. This means your car has to have a lot of horsepower but it also has to to get good mileage as long green runs here are common. The smart drivers draft in 2nd place until the end and make the pass for the win.
Tires are not an issue here so you might see some two tire changes. But the fuel window here is about 35 laps.
Where is the trouble? The best place to pass is off the corners but you have to get underneath the guy in front of you and force him up the track. If you can do that, you'll complete the pass. If you don't, you'll wreck him.
